Commodore Trail... Miami-Dade FL Bike Trail

Connects Old Cutler Trail to Rickenbacker Trail in South Miami

The Commodore Trail (Route #1) is a varied ride through scenic neighborhoods and central Coconut Grove, passing several parks and historic sites. It connects to Old Cutler Trail at the south end and to Rickenbacker Trail at the north. The path meanders roadside along several roads (we were glad for the route markers), and varies along the way from dedicated trail, to narrow sidewalk, to bike lane, to shoulder to shared roadway with many road crossings and driveways. Be aware as you go, there is a lot of traffic and sometimes the bike route shares the road. A citizen initiative is underway to improve the trail, making it a safer ride in this lovely area. Biking on Commodore Trail... Comments and Photos

Cocoplum Circle to Peacock Park

The south end of the trail is at Cocoplum Circle, with parking and connection to Old Cutler Trail. Start the ride by crossing the bridge over historic Coral Gables Waterway to scenic Ingraham Park and continue through residential areas along Edgewater Dr., Douglas Rd. and Main Hwy. Main Hwy. then leads into central Coconut Grove with restaurants, shops, galleries, churches, hotels and parks. In this section, the trail runs on both road shoulder and dedicated path.

Peacock Park to Alice Wainwright Park

Turning off McFarlane and onto S. Bayshore Dr., this section goes along the bayfront and through several parks. Bike paths run through Kenneth Myers Park, and at David Kennedy Park the trail continues as the Siegendorf Bicycle Path, paved with shaved tires. Bayshore Dr. becomes S. Miami Ave. where the trail passes Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. The trail here varies from dedicated path, to sidewalk, to shoulder.

At SE 32nd St. turn east to Brickell Ave. and follow the shared roadway to Alice Wainwright Park. At the north end, the trail exits through a gate onto Rickenbacker Causeway and link to the Rickenbacker Trail.

Some History

The trail is named for Commodore Ralph Munroe, a founder of Coconut Grove. His home, the oldest in its original location in Miami-Dade County (1891), is now The Barnacle Historic State Park.
