Elfers Spur Recreational Trail... West Florida

Connecting Two Trails in Pinellas and Pasco Counties

The Elfers Spur Recreational Trail is a connector trail built on an abandoned railroad line, near Tarpon Springs. The trail ultimately will run almost 2 miles, linking the Pinellas Trail and Coastal Anclote Trail, but a section is closed due to erosion damage along the Anclote River. Biking the Elfers Spur Recreational Trail

The paved trail is easy to ride, we look forward to revisiting when fully opened. Currently, the 1.2 miles from the Coastal Anclote Trail to the bridge crossing the Anclote River is open. From here, the final section to the Pinellas Trail was closed. We visited the trail starting from the end of the Coastal Anclote Trail. Cross Anclote Blvd. to the Elfers Spur Trail.

  • The first 1/10 mile runs alongside L&R Industrial Blvd., then the trail goes across and continues off road.
  • It runs past homes and an industrial area for the first half-mile, then comes to two road crossings - at Alt 19, and at Dixie Hwy. (Old US 19A). Be careful, use the crossing signals.
  • The section from Dixie Hwy. to the Anclote River is more remote through the river watershed.
  • A spur runs to the North Anclote River Nature Park (see below), then the trail is blocked at the bridge. A seawall is being constructed to prevent future erosion, requiring a section of trail to be rebuilt.

North Anclote River Nature Park

The North Anclote River Nature Park connects to the Elfers Spur Trail via a 1/4 mile trail near the Anclote River bridge. This is a pleasant riverside park with restrooms, playground, picnicking, nature trails, fishing pier, boardwalk, and kayak/canoe launch.

Some History

The area, originally known as the Baillie Settlement, was established in the late 1800's. The name was changed with the arrival of the Elfers Post Office (1909), named after the postmaster's wife's family name. The railroad - known as the Elfers Spur - arrived in 1913 for shipping citrus, an important local product. The Elfers Spur Trail is built on the abandoned railroad grade.
