Elfers Spur Trail
Updated: December 2025
The Elfers Spur Recreational Trail is a connector trail built on an abandoned railroad line, near Tarpon Springs. The trail ultimately will run almost 2 miles, linking the Pinellas Trail and Coastal Anclote Trail, but a section is closed due to erosion damage along the Anclote River. (Map link and photos below.)
Location: Pinellas County, Pasco County
End Points: Pinellas Trail, Coastal Anclote Trail
Mileage: 1.2 miles, 2 miles when complete
Surface: Asphalt, 12 ft. wide
Nearby points of interest: Pinellas Trail,
Coastal Anclote Trail, North Anclote River Nature Park
Bike Shops/Rentals: N/A
The paved trail is easy to ride, we look forward to revisiting when fully opened. Currently, the 1.2 miles from the Coastal Anclote Trail to the bridge crossing the Anclote River is open. From here, the final section to the Pinellas Trail was closed. We visited the trail starting from the end of the Coastal Anclote Trail. Cross Anclote Blvd. to the Elfers Spur Trail.
The North Anclote River Nature Park connects to the Elfers Spur Trail via a 1/4 mile trail near the Anclote River bridge. This is a pleasant riverside park with restrooms, playground, picnicking, nature trails, fishing pier, boardwalk, and kayak/canoe launch.
The area, originally known as the Baillie Settlement, was established in the late 1800's. The name was changed with the arrival of the Elfers Post Office (1909), named after the postmaster's wife's family name. The railroad - known as the Elfers Spur - arrived in 1913 for shipping citrus, an important local product. The Elfers Spur Trail is built on the abandoned railroad grade.
