Four Freedoms Trail
Reported: March 2014
This paved trail runs 12 miles north from Madison, FL, to the Withlacoochee River (North) on the Georgia border on an old Valdosta & Southern Railroad right-of-way. For the more casual recreational rider* this is a pleasant rural trail with lots of shade, worth a visit if in the area. Rest areas are provided along the way. Also visit Madison's historic downtown, shops and restaurants.
Location: Madison County (Madison)
End Points: Madison to Pinetta (Withlacoochee River-north)
Mileage: 12 miles
Surface: Asphalt
Nearby points of interest: Suwannee River State Park, Madison Blue Spring
Page Summary:
The trail is mostly rural and parallels the road but with a wide buffer and trees that provide shade. There are a few areas where the trail runs immediately next to the road for short stretches.
From outside Pinetta about 1/4 mile to the river, there's a fairly steady 1 or 2 degree downward grade, so a nice burn coming back (for Florida at least). There's a picnic area and observation deck at the river.
*Note: We’ve read other reviews highlighting the amount of leaves and debris on the trail, plus the many tree root bumps. For the most part, we found this to be true at this writing. If you have a need for speed, we suggest the Jacksonville-Baldwin Trail to the east, or the Tallahassee-St. Marks State Trail to the west.
