Florida Eco-biking... here are some natural Florida "eco-biking" and hiking trails we've explored (there are many more) located on State and Federal public lands.
Florida Parks and Managed Preserves offer a wealth of eco-tourism opportunities, and eco-biking is a great way to appreciate natural Florida. There are many unpaved (and some paved) trails on public lands where eco-tourism can be enjoyed on most wide-tire recreational bicycles. Expressly, eco-biking is not "mountain biking." We seek out the easier unpaved trails with hard-pack surfaces, and try to avoid the physical challenges of deep sand and roots that test avid Florida mountain bikers.
As roadways became more crowded and bicycling became more popular, state and local governments across the U.S. began to realize that safe, off-street bike trails were desirable. The first paved rail-trails (built on abandoned railroad corridors) became hugely popular. As time went on, planners realized that these trails were being used for more than just bicycling. In order to sell the concept to the greatest number of people within the community, terms like "multi-use trail" and "recreational trail" began to replace the term "bike trail" at public meetings.
Today, the term "multi-use trail" typically refers to a wide, paved, off-street trail that is ideal for a variety of outdoor recreation activities, to include bicycling, skating, walking, jogging, and other physical fitness activities. Today, multi-use trails have revitalized scores of old downtowns across America. Some are a draw for tourism. Today, some people (like us) plan their vacation travel around visiting as many of these trails as possible. (Check out BikeTripper.net )
No matter your age or condition, studies show that multi-use trails (paved, off-street) are safer places to bike and hike. Florida has some of the longest paved rail-trails in America. Our Top 10 Trails are ideal for all types of cycles, including cruisers, hybrids, road bikes, recumbent bikes and tandems. Other than occasional road crossings, most avoid motor traffic, noise, and fumes. Nearby bike shops and rentals are listed. With more multi-use bike trails in the works, we add and update regularly, so please come back often.
